Lately my wife and mother have been nag.. er... encouraging me to get a headset for my phone. I have a 30-45 minute commute each way and use this time to check in with family, friends, and business partners. My mother keeps pointing out in NY it's illegal now to use a cell phone in the car without one.
So, with my new SMT-5600 Smartphone, I finally took the plunge on a Bluetooth 1.1 wireless headset with the Motorola Wireless Headset HS810. I grabbed one at T-Mobile for $100 (AT&T Wireless store I walked into had the older unit with a longer boom mic). This thing has 5 hours of talk time, and an astonishing 500 hours of standby time. I was skeptical that the mic would even work given my car's whiny engine (S2000). The verdict is in: it works even better than my old phone (Orange SPV-E200) and is on-par with the mic on the SMT-5600 itself. It's comfortable and the audio volume is good. It can also switch around for both ears and the boom mic folds back to make it ultra-compact.
Once you get over the fact that you look like something out of Star Trek (or someone- Uhura?) driving around, it works really well. Just tap the button for hands-free voice dialing using tags that you pre-set on your Smartphone (a feature I didn't even realize was there).
So being a good husband, I got one for my wife as well. She uses hers in the car but also when walking around the neighborhood with our son which has created a bit of an issue. She is worried about looking like some crazy lady talking and laughing to herself so she pulls her hair back on one side so it can be seen. Perhaps there are still some places you should not use this kind of technology :).
The thing works with your PC as well- now I just need to find the right software to test out- maybe Skype or another VOIP app.
